COMMENTARY: As organizations embrace the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI)—from generative tools like Microsoft Copilot to enterprise-wide large language model (LLM) initiatives—one truth is becoming increasingly clear: You can’t scale AI safely without governance. AI governance isn’t just about putting limits on what models can do. It’s about ensuring the integrity, accountability, and security of the data ecosystems that power those models. And yet, for many organizations, that foundational layer is either missing or underdeveloped. AI doesn’t just use your data—it amplifies it, often in a rapid and uncontrolled manner. Without strong controls in place, AI systems can create a whole host of risks, including surfacing sensitive content users shouldn’t have seen; propagating mislabeled or outdated data; creating outputs that become new risk vectors; and undermining compliance with regulations like HIPAA, GDPR, PCI, and others. AI governance frameworks are emerging, but the real question is: How do you put them into practice? There are important steps for AI governance to best protect your data in this day and age as AI transforms organizations.
A Practical Framework for AI Governance
The following practical nine-point AI governance framework will help organizations identify the tools that can move them from theory to execution: 1. Discover & Classify – Governance starts with knowing what data you have. Most organizations can’t confidently answer questions around where their sensitive data lives; what business-critical data is being used in AI workflows; and how much data is stale, duplicative, or misclassified.
Organizations should seek out a data security governance platform that autonomously discovers and categorizes all forms of data—structured, unstructured, cloud, and on-prem—and doesn’t require rules, regex, or agents. The most effective solutions leverage AI/machine learning (ML) to analyze context, not just content, and provide visibility into IP, contracts, PII, and other data categories without manual configuration. 2. Enforce Data Governance Policies – Once classified, governance means control for organizations. That includes policies around who should have access, where data should reside, and how data should be shared internally or externally. Solutions with remediation workflows built in will help organizations enable enforcement. They can automatically fix permissions, adjust sharing settings, migrate or delete data, and update classifications—all without manual rules. 3. Integrate with AI Governance Tools – Microsoft 365 Copilot, SharePoint, Teams, and other cloud services where AI-generated or AI-accessed content lives are vital. Organizations need a tool that scans and classifies AI-generated content, verifies permissions, and alerts on risky access or data movement. 8. Train and Educate Teams – AI governance isn’t just a platform—it’s a practice. Training and enablement with real-time insights, risk drill-downs, and co-managed policy design are critical for consistent and effective governance. 9. Continuously Improve – Organizations should partner with a vendor that won’t just deploy their solution and go radio silent until renewal time. The best practice is to find one that continuously invests in improving their technology and in you as a valued customer.
