The lines between commercial building management, the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and traditional managed IT services continue to blur. The latest example: Operational Technology Integrators (OTI) has acquired Ontai. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The deal "creates a singular buildings IoT umbrella under which OTI will grow a robust suite of managed services," the companies said in a prepared statement.

Further describing the deal, OTI pointed to the convergence of operational technology (found in buildings and facilities management) and more traditional information technology. The company explained:

"As system integrations become more networked and managed services more robust, operational technology and information technology are becoming increasingly interlinked within building systems. The complementary expertise of OTI and Ontai will streamline the integration process, expand building system capabilities and increase the value of the IoT for commercial buildings."

ChannelE2E doesn't have a feel for OTI's headcount or annual revenues, though we're checking on both.

Areas of Focus

OTI, led by president Brian Turner, positions itself as a master systems integrator and building controls contractor. The company, which has offices in Pleasant Hill, Calif., and New York, works with facilities teams to deploy technologies across retail shopping malls, data centers, mixed-use new construction, office buildings and more. OTI also specializes in HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) controls.

Ontai, meanwhile, is an MSP based in Orinda, California. The company's professional services include most of the most popular categories -- everything from networking and virtualization to security, storage, systems management and communications.

Led by Rich Miller, Ontai has clientele across such vertical markets as financial services, retail and manufacturing, as well as city and county Bay Area government agencies. LinkedIn records suggest the company has roughly five employees or fewer.

Miller joins OTI as VP of IT, and Ontai's team of network designers, security professionals and engineers will assume various roles within OTI’s Pleasant Hill headquarters, the companies indicated.
