MSP, AI benefits/risks

MSPs want AI results. Ingram Micro says start with the data

AI data

AI promises faster workflows and greater efficiency. That sounds great, but MSPs need a solid data foundation before the technology can even begin to deliver meaningful results.

That was a key message from Jennifer Anaya, senior vice president of global marketing for Ingram Micro. Anaya also discussed how the distributor’s Xvantage investments are helping partners connect business systems, access information in real time and reduce manual work.

Important takeaways for MSPs include:

  • Start with a data strategy. MSPs may need to hire a data expert or partner with one before pursuing larger AI initiatives.
  • Bring data into existing workflows. Ingram Micro’s Model Context Protocol Server securely connects AI assistants such as Claude and Copilot with live company data.
  • Connect disconnected business systems. The Xvantage Integrations Hub links the platform with tools partners already use, including Salesforce, HubSpot and ConnectWise.
  • Look for measurable efficiency gains. Matrix Integration estimated the technology could save its team 1,000 to 1,500 hours this year. IT Design Consulting said its integrated process can generate quotes in seconds rather than hours.
  • Use real-time intelligence to support growth. Faster access to data can help MSPs see a broader picture of their businesses and identify new opportunities.
  • Expect more from distribution. Anaya said distributors can complement their traditional aggregation role with financing, technology, intelligence and support for MSPs serving SMB customers.

“If you don’t have a really solid data strategy, AI is not going to work,” Anaya said. “It’ll work here and there, but it’s not going to give you the impact that you need as a MSP, or that you’re going to need to give your clients.”

Successful AI adoption depends on more than choosing the right model or assistant. It requires reliable data, connected systems and a clear understanding of the business processes AI should improve.
