Salesforce envisions AI agents making purchases, transforming procurement

Salesforce's Tyler Carlson, senior vice president and head of product for AgentExchange and partner experience, discussed the near future where artificial intelligence agents could handle procurement tasks, including making purchases on behalf of human teams. This evolution is driven by advancements in AI tools and Salesforce's strategic decisions regarding its CRM software and AgentExchange marketplace, according to reporting by CRN.

Carlson explained that procurement teams might soon authorize specialized AI agents, or even general models like ChatGPT, to manage the entire request for proposal (RFP) process. This includes writing RFPs, distributing them to vendors, collecting responses, scoring them against business needs, and ultimately making purchases within a set budget using a credit card.

This capability is facilitated by Salesforce's architectural changes to AgentExchange, enhancing discoverability through answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO), allowing AI agents to index and access information more effectively. These improvements also benefit Salesforce's partner ecosystem, making them more discoverable within the marketplace. The company is also focusing on AgentExchange commerce, enabling partners to sell services and products, including bundled offerings with Salesforce credits, streamlining transactions and procurement friction for customers. This move positions Salesforce as a provider of business process infrastructure for AI, leveraging its platform's metadata and semantic understanding to enable AI tools to operate effectively within enterprises.
