Microsoft’s AI spending boom comes with a workforce shake-up

Microsoft AI workforce layoffs (ChatGPT)

Microsoft has introduced a voluntary exit offer for approximately 60,000 employees as the company reallocates resources toward artificial intelligence infrastructure, according to a recent report by CRN.

The offer, which impacts roughly 27% of the company's 223,000-person global workforce, is available to staff in the United States, Canada, India and the United Kingdom at level 70 and below. Eligible employees have until December to decide, with departures scheduled for Dec. 31. This initiative follows previous workforce reductions and a voluntary retirement program as the tech giant balances rising capital expenditures, which are expected to reach $175 billion in 2026 to support AI demand.

While some sales, marketing and engineering teams are excluded, the program provides financial support and career planning resources to participants. Analysts suggest the move is designed to preserve profit margins while the company prioritizes AI development. Microsoft joins other major technology firms, including Intel, Oracle and Cisco, in adjusting headcount to navigate shifting business requirements in the era of agentic AI. The company maintains that these changes reflect a broader effort to increase organizational flexibility and adapt to evolving operational needs.
