The role of the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) is rapidly evolving, driven by the increasing importance of cyber resilience as the primary measure of security success. New research indicates that the average cost of one hour of endpoint downtime is $19 million, making recovery a critical board-level concern. Krista Case, principal analyst at theCUBE Research, identified the shift towards resilience benchmarks as a key theme at Black Hat USA 2026. She noted that mature security organizations should anticipate disruptions and ensure they can quickly restore operations to a trusted state. The CISO's responsibilities are expanding beyond risk management to include guiding the safe adoption of enterprise AI, establishing governance, and operational guardrails. This evolution sees CISOs collaborating more closely with engineering, legal, compliance, and business leaders, embedding security as a core business function.
