Access Acquires Six Data Protection Companies

Access, the largest privately-held records and information management (RIM) services provider in the US, is making a major push into Canada.

The firm has acquired six Canadian records management companies, located in Vancouver, Calgary, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Saint John, and St. John’s, servicing more than 20 key markets across 10 Canadian provinces.

In recent years, the acquired companies have been operating together as Innovative Records Systems Corp.

Innovative Records Systems is Canada’s second largest provider of records management services. The collective has more than 200 employees coast-to-coast and approximately 750,000 square feet of warehouse space in 13 facilities. Innovative’s companies serve more than 4,000 customers and store over 5 million boxes of records and data tapes in their high-security record centers. The companies’ services include physical records storage and document management; scanning, digitization and e-document management; shredding and secure document destruction; and off-site data security services.

According to Bill Roberts, who spoke on behalf of the Innovative Records System executive team, the group had been undergoing an extensive search for the right partner. “Access’ culture of client, company, and community stood out to us as a real differentiator. We are thrilled to become part of the Access family,” he said.

Access is headquartered in Woburn, Mass and was founded in 2004. It targets its services and solutions toward local and international businesses they meet compliance standards. The company’s data protection and secure chain of custody protocols are designed to reduce the risks associated with document management, retention, accessibility, and destruction. The company also operates in Central and South America Berkshire Partners and GI Partners are both backers of the firm.

The companies acquired were: BCRM Services Ltd. (Vancouver); Calgary Archives Corp. (Calgary); Crown Store-All Facilities, SecureShred and Crown Filing Systems which were all divisions of Crown Enterprises Ltd. (Regina and Saskatoon); Phoenix Recycling Inc. (Winnipeg); FileBank Record Centre Ltd. (Toronto and Ottawa); and Docu Guard Ltd. (Atlantic Canada).
