MSP Rolls Out Nutanix Managed Services

Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) provider Nutanix continues to show some anecdotal momentum with MSPs (managed services providers).

Two key points of reference:

  • Firstnet Solutions was one of the first MSPs to offer hybrid cloud services powered exclusively by the Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform.
  • More recently, Insight’s Cloud & Data Center Transformation division, Datalink, has expanded its MSP and support offerings to feature Nutanix Enterprise Cloud OS. The support services span Nutanix software running on HP Enterprise, Dell Technologies and Cisco Systems hardware.

Rodney Foreman, vice president of global channel sales at Nutanix, said in a prepared statement, “Every enterprise today is grappling with the challenges of managing the IT infrastructure across hybrid environments. Insight’s deep experience in all things cloud, as well as the on-premises environments, gives our Nutanix clients the option to outsource management and incident resolution of our platform with confidence that they are in good hands.”

Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI) Market Share

Nutanix is growing rapidly but faces intense competition in the HCI market, which gives IT managers a single dashboard for managing their data center infrastructure.

Dell controls about 29.6 percent of the HCI market, followed by Nutanix (22.2 percent), and HPE and Cisco (5 percent each), according to IDC market research for Q1 2018. Multiple vendors represent the other 38 percent of the market, IDC says.

Nutanix revenues reached $303.7 million in its 4Q 2018 ended July 31, up from $252.5 million in 4Q 2017, the company announced in August.

I believe there is a big opportunity right now for MSPs that want to focus their attention on either security or hyperconverged infrastructure. While the on-staff IT department might not be able to handle the management and maintenance of platforms like Nutanix, a specialized MSP can offer support for these kinds of areas where the knowledge and skill level might be lacking.
