Databricks Acquires Mooncake Labs to Advance Lakebase Vision

Databricks has acquired Mooncake Labs to accelerate Lakebase, a new kind of OLTP database built on Postgres and designed for AI agents. The idea is to make transactional and analytical data instantly usable in one place, without the overhead of ETL.

With Mooncake’s real-time mirroring built into Lakebase, Postgres data becomes immediately available across the Lakehouse and Agent Bricks, giving developers and AI agents a shared foundation to build, learn, and act on live data.

AI agents are changing how applications are created and run. They generate code, launch workflows, and produce data faster than teams can govern or sync. Traditional databases weren’t built for that. They sit outside the data platform, creating silos and slowdowns that make it harder to keep analytics and AI current. Mooncake’s approach closes that gap. Every Postgres update flows straight into the Lakehouse, so as agents spin up new tables or events, analytics and models stay in step.

For developers, this means less friction and more speed. Lakebase becomes the single place where apps, analytics, and AI all run on the same data - fresh, consistent, and ready for use. No more juggling pipelines or waiting for sync jobs to catch up. As enterprises experiment with agent-driven apps and workflows, that unification becomes critical. Mooncake’s technology brings the immediacy that modern workloads demand, without adding complexity to manage.
