13. Jumping From Cisco to Microsoft: Tony Shakib, formerly VP of Cisco Systems' IoT vertical business unit, has joined Microsoft as GM of IoT and Intelligent Cloud, according to his LinkedIn profile...

12. Rutgers Suffers Oracle Outage: Rutgers University has suffered a serious Oracle financial outage, which has hampered the university's ability to pay bills...

11. Virtual Machines in the Cloud: Research by TSO Logic, based on analysis of 10,000 customer physical servers and 25,000 virtual machines, suggests that 45% of existing VMs would run more efficiently in the cloud... Yowzers.

10. New Angel Investor Network: The University North Carolina at Chapel Hill has launched Carolina Angel Network (CAN). The network is designed to "connect alumni, faculty, students, donors and other members" of the UNC-Chapel Hill community with "promising affiliated, early-stage, private companies to provide advice, networks and funding." Randy Myer, former entrepreneur, current angel investor and Kenan-Flagler professor, will serve as managing director. 9. Cloud Monitoring for Gov't Customers: DLT Solutions and Evident.io are partnering to make it " easier for government agencies to secure their cloud environments." The partnership includes a range of cloud infrastructure, monitoring and security capabilities..

8. HP Inc. Invades CES: The PC giant, as expected, is showing off consumer and commercial PCs at the CES conference this week in Las Vegas. Among the new offerings to check out: The second-generation Sprout Pro by HP -- an immersive all-in-one PC. HP Inc. Channel Chief Stephanie Dismore, who oversees the commercial and consumer partner relationships, is expected to be on hand at the conference.

7. Xerox Breakup Finalized: Xerox has completed its breakup into two companies -- essentially launching Conduent Inc. as a business process service provider. Xerox will now focus digital printing solutions and associated services.

6. Carbonite Midmarket BDR Momentum?: Carbonite is expected to offer a business and financial update at the Needham Growth Conference on January 11 in New York. The business continuity specialist has spent the past year diversifying its business -- extending from SMB into the midmarket, and blending pure cloud backup with on-premises appliances. Partners have been core to Carbonite's expansion.

5. M&A - Disaster Recovery: ARKIVE Inc. has acquired selected assets from Iron Mountain Inc. The deal allows Iron Mountain to fulfill certain regulatory requirements, while empowering ARKIVE to extend into eight markets across the U.S. and Canada. ARKIVE offers a suite of information management services including ARKIVE Storage, ARKIVE Destruction, ARKIVE Data Protection and ARKIVE Digital Solutions.

4. Brocade Channel Chief Move: Former Brocade Channel Chief Pete Peterson has joined TESSCO Technologies as senior VP of sales. The move comes as Broadcom prepares to finalize the Brocade acquisition, which will include selling off Brocade's networking business. Broadcom announced the $5.5 billion Brocade acquisition in November 2016.

3. Microsoft Cloud Cost Models: How much does it cost a business to run workloads in Microsoft Azure? To answer that question, eMazzanti Technologies has launched an Azure and Dynamics cost model. It's designed to help business leaders evaluate the projected outlays for deployment of applications and data to the cloud.

2. Citrix Partner Summit: Citrix Summit 2017, the company's partner conference, kicks off next week in Anaheim, Calif. The company has sold off some assets in the past year -- but also acquired some technologies as well. Channel Chief Craig Stilwell will surely have some surprises in store for partners.
