VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1 gives partners a bigger private cloud services play

With enhanced NVMe memory tiering, expanded live patching, faster cluster upgrades, and real-time observability, the recently unveiled VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.1 infrastructure platform from Broadcom is giving channel partners new capabilities to deliver new services to enterprise customers.

VCF 9.1 builds on VMWare's original VCF 9.0 release as an infrastructure platform for production AI workloads, allowing enterprises to create AI and Kubernetes native private cloud platforms that include built-in security and mixed compute infrastructure support for processors from AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA.

The new memory tiering capabilities allow enterprises to extend effective memory pools by pairing DRAM with NVMe memory, while also using extended vSAN deduplication and compression to help customers reduce storage costs without bringing in new hardware, according to Broadcom. Additionally, VCF 9.1's live patching has been boosted to handle up to 80% of use cases without host evacuation, while also providing continuous compliance enforcement for enterprises running sensitive AI workloads.

The latest VCF 9.1 release also includes cluster upgrades that are four times faster than before, as well as fleet capacity that is doubled from the previous version. Newly added real-time observability provides enterprises with actionable insights from their telemetry, allowing them to expand AI infrastructure without more workers, according to Broadcom.

These new features in VCF 9.1 together represent a massive services opportunity for channel partners, a Broadcom representative told ChannelE2E.

"Adoption of VCF is our single biggest priority, and we are actively leaning into partners who have built the skills and capabilities to help customers make the move from basic virtualization to a true private cloud," they said. "That migration journey is where the services revenue lives: assessment, design, deployment, and managed operations. The practical question is always where the customer begins, and memory tiering is a compelling starting point. We have seen instances where memory tiering alone generates enough efficiency to help customers offset the cost of their VCF licenses, and that is real, measurable value that builds the business case to go deeper."

Broadcom and VMware are "seeing enterprises rebuilding their cloud strategies around private infrastructure, and they need partners who understand how to design, deploy, and manage it," the representative said. "VCF 9.1 gives partners a platform purpose-built for this moment, with the cost economics, security architecture, and operational scale to win production AI deals. The customer demand is already there, and this release arms partners with a differentiated solution to capture it."

Paul Nashawaty, principal analyst for AppDev and modernization at theCUBE Research, told ChannelE2E that the VCF 9.1 updates "should create meaningful opportunities" for channel partners and enterprises.

"Customers are looking for trusted advisors who can help operationalize hybrid cloud, modernize legacy infrastructure, and prepare environments for AI adoption, said Nashawaty. "At the same time, theCUBE Research AppDev data continues to show growing enterprise demand for managed platform services, FinOps guidance, and automation consulting. That opens the door for partners to expand recurring revenue streams around migration services, governance, lifecycle management, AI infrastructure optimization, and managed operations."

Nashawaty said what stands out most in the new offering is VCF 9.1's "continued focus on simplifying operations across virtualization, Kubernetes, networking, storage, and security while also preparing customers for AI-driven workloads. The most important new capabilities are likely around lifecycle automation, unified management, and infrastructure readiness for AI and GPU-intensive environments."

Enterprises are reaching a point where they find that managing hybrid environments manually is no longer scalable, said Nashawaty. "Features that improve automation, policy enforcement, workload portability, and integrated operations are becoming strategic differentiators because organizations want cloud-like agility without losing control over performance, security, or cost. From that perspective, VCF 9.1 is less about incremental virtualization improvements and more about enabling a consistent private cloud platform for modern application delivery and AI operations."
