Snowflake Launches Gen2 Compute, Adaptive Warehouses, and AI Governance to Streamline Data Management

At Snowflake Summit 2025, Snowflake introduced a series of compute and platform enhancements aimed at simplifying warehouse operations, accelerating analytics, and embedding AI into governance workflows.

Boosting Performance with Gen2 Standard Warehouses
Snowflake's Standard Warehouse – Generation 2 is now generally available, delivering over twice the performance for core analytics workloads. Gen2 is built to support the growing demand for faster insights across expanding datasets and complex queries. The upgraded virtual warehouse leverages next-generation hardware and optimized software to improve speed and responsiveness without increasing infrastructure complexity.

Simplifying Operations with Adaptive Compute
Also announced is Snowflake Adaptive Compute, a new service in private preview that automates resource scaling and query routing. Warehouses built on this service — called Adaptive Warehouses — adjust compute usage based on workload demands, eliminating the need for manual tuning or multi-cluster configuration. This approach reduces the time teams spend managing performance settings and allows businesses to run more efficiently, focusing on innovation rather than infrastructure.

Expanding Data Visibility and AI-Driven Governance
Snowflake also unveiled enhancements to its Horizon Catalog that broaden data access and strengthen governance. Upcoming features include support for Catalog-Linked Databases that sync with Iceberg-based catalogs like Apache Polaris and AWS Glue. Customers will also gain the ability to search external databases directly through Universal Search. For security and compliance, Snowflake is introducing Copilot for Horizon Catalog, an AI assistant that simplifies governance queries using natural language — no SQL required.

Building Resilience and Flexibility Across the Platform
Additional platform updates focus on strengthening reliability and user control. New immutable backups via Snapshots support recovery and compliance needs, while extensions to Snowflake’s Trust Center allow customers to integrate third-party security scanners. AI-powered observability tools are now generally available, giving customers real-time insights into performance and helping teams identify and resolve issues quickly.
