Lenovo Expands ThinkSystem and ThinkAgile Portfolios to Support AI-Ready Data Management

As more organizations move AI projects out of pilot mode, many are running into the same constraint: their data infrastructure was not designed for what AI workloads actually demand. Storage complexity, rigid virtualization choices, and legacy systems are slowing progress just as expectations around AI-driven outcomes rise. Lenovo’s latest ThinkSystem and ThinkAgile updates are aimed squarely at that problem, combining new storage platforms with advisory and deployment services that focus on making data usable for AI at scale.

Announced December 10, 2025, the expanded portfolio brings together infrastructure and lifecycle services designed to support AI alongside core enterprise workloads, without forcing customers into disruptive rip-and-replace strategies.

Why infrastructure flexibility now matters more than ever

Virtualization and HCI strategies are in flux across the market. Organizations are balancing on-prem environments with cloud and edge deployments, while reassessing long-term software commitments.

Stuart McRae, Executive Director and GM of Data Storage at Lenovo ISG, told ChannelE2E that customers are increasingly prioritizing flexibility over fixed architectures. “We’re seeing customers move toward more open and flexible infrastructure because their environments are becoming a dynamic mix of cloud, edge and on-prem,” McRae said. “Organizations today need the ability to shift between virtualization and HCI stacks without locking themselves into a single software architecture.”

That shift directly influenced the design of Lenovo’s updated platforms. McRae noted that ThinkAgile FX allows customers to start with one HCI configuration and transition to another over time without replacing hardware. “This flexibility gives our customers critical investment protection, at a time when virtualization strategies are in flux,” he said.

Modern storage for virtualized and AI workloads

Lenovo also refreshed its ThinkSystem DS Series to address another common challenge: storage environments that have not kept pace with modern workloads. Many organizations still rely on hard-drive-based systems that limit performance and complicate security.

McRae said the DS Series is designed to offer a clear modernization path. “The ThinkSystem DS Series has similar differentiation with an all-flash SAN platform that’s simple to deploy and scale, but also delivers advanced data services like ransomware protection, immutable snapshots and encryption,” he said. “DS offers a high-value path to modernization that improves efficiency for virtualization, data modernization and early AI adoption.”

The emphasis is not just on raw performance, but on reducing operational friction while improving resilience, especially as AI workloads are layered onto existing environments.

What AI workloads look like today

While AI discussions often focus on long-term transformation, McRae said most customers are starting with practical, operational use cases that deliver near-term value.

“Most of our customers are starting with practical AI use cases that drive immediate operational value,” he said. In retail, that often means video analytics for loss prevention or scan accuracy. In manufacturing, quality inspection and defect detection at the edge are common starting points. In healthcare, AI is increasingly used for rapid analysis of screenings and test results.

Across these scenarios, the infrastructure requirement is consistent. “All these use cases require fast access to data generated locally, and the ability to run inferencing close to where the data is created,” McRae said.

All-flash storage plays a key role in making that possible. McRae explained that moving away from hard drives allows organizations to process more data in less time. GPU support further extends that capability. “GPU support on systems like ThinkAgile MX builds on this by accelerating models directly in the data center or in edge environments,” he said. “Together, flash storage and GPUs give organizations the speed and responsiveness they need for heightened customer experiences and improved business metrics.”

Services that shorten the path to value

Infrastructure upgrades alone are rarely enough to deliver AI outcomes. Many organizations struggle with data readiness, migration planning, and operational alignment once new systems are installed.

McRae said Lenovo’s advisory and migration services are designed to address those gaps. “Customers want to modernize their infrastructure, but often don’t have the in-house expertise to prepare their data for AI or align existing systems with new workloads,” he said. Lenovo’s services help customers assess their current state, define a data and storage strategy, and guide deployment so AI initiatives move forward more quickly.

Deployment services focus on simplifying day-zero experiences, while Premier Storage Support provides ongoing monitoring, optimization, and faster issue resolution. “The result is a shorter path from installation to measurable business outcomes,” McRae said.

Implications for partners and MSPs

The launch also expands opportunities for channel partners and MSPs looking to build services around AI and infrastructure modernization.

“For partners and MSPs, this launch expands the set of solutions available to build services around,” McRae said. He pointed to ThinkAgile FX and the DS Series as platforms designed for repeatability and ease of management, making them well-suited for managed services and hybrid cloud offerings.

Lenovo’s advisory, deployment, and support services also enable new recurring revenue models. Partners can package assessments, data readiness programs, deployments, and lifecycle optimization as part of ongoing service engagements. As customers continue transitioning from legacy systems to AI-ready environments, partners can extend Lenovo’s stack with their own expertise and services.

Lenovo’s latest ThinkSystem and ThinkAgile updates reflect a broader shift in how AI infrastructure is being approached. Rather than treating AI as a standalone initiative, the focus is on modernizing data foundations so AI can coexist with existing workloads and evolve over time.
