Commvault has unveiled new business continuity capabilities for Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure; data protection appliances for MSPs; and deeper relationships with HP Enterprise and NetApp. The comprehensive announcements surfaced at this week's Commvault GO 2018 conference in Nashville.
The developments are welcome news for partners and customers seeking solutions in the hyper-competitive business continuity market. But a big question mark remains: Commvault has been seeking a new CEO for several months, but has yet to publicly name a successor to current leader N. Robert Hammer.
Commvault Cloud Services for AWS, Azure
On the research and development (R&D) front, the Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery as-a-Service portfolio includes three new cloud-based services:
- Commvault Complete B&RaaS gives customers a "point and click" delivery model, enabling them to reduce technology operating costs on data infrastructure, software, services, training, and compliance, the company says.
- Commvault Complete B&RaaS for Virtual Machines (VMs) offers customers a “pay-as-you-go” service for cloud and VM protection and management over Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure public clouds.
- Commvault Complete B&RaaS for Native Cloud Applications provides backup and recovery services for native cloud application data, including Microsoft Office 365 and Salesforce with features like long-term retention, compliance, and archiving.
The portfolio will surface via the Microsoft Azure Marketplace, the AWS Marketplace, and the Commvault Marketplace by December 2018. The new services will also be available for purchase through Commvault's Partner Network with additional options for support, plans, and customization.
Commvault Data Protection Appliances
The company also introduced on-premises appliances to help MSPs monetize and manage information across hybrid cloud environments.
A new HyperScale Appliance is designed for MSPs and large enterprises while the Commvault Remote Office Appliance operates as a turnkey appliance to help enterprises extend Commvault’s solutions to smaller remote offices, the company asserts.
Deeper relationships with HP Enterprise and NetApp also surfaced. Commvault’s technology will integrate with HPE’s StoreOnce systems. As a result, users will be able to move data across public, private, or hybrid cloud environments, the company said.
Also, Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery Software is now available from NetApp and that storage company's channel partners.
Commvault CEO Search: Mum's the Word
Meanwhile, the hunt apparently continues for a new CEO to succeed N. Robert Hammer. Activist investor Elliott Management earlier this year pressured Commvault to find a new leader amid concerns about the data protection company's financial performance.
During a July 2018 earnings call, Hammer offered this brief statement about the CEO search:
The CEO search committee of our board has retained a leading search firm in May who have been identifying and actively interviewing candidates. We have no further updates at this time nor a timetable of an announcement. Together with the executive team, I am personally involved with this process and I am fully supportive of finding a leader to ensure a smooth transition and make sure we continue to drive Commvault's future success"
Commvault will hold its next quarterly earnings call on October 30, 2018. Just a hunch, but we suspect the CEO announcement may come at that time.
