Backblaze has launched a set of enterprise-focused security updates to its
B2 Cloud Storage platform aimed at helping organizations detect threats earlier, enforce access controls, and manage cloud storage more efficiently. The features signal a stronger alignment with zero-trust architectures, particularly for teams navigating hybrid and multi-cloud environments.
Smarter Detection and Deeper Visibility
The most notable update is Anomaly Alerts, now in private preview. This AI-powered tool monitors for behavioral anomalies - sudden spikes in downloads, unusual access patterns, or usage that falls outside of historical baselines - that could signal unauthorized access or data exfiltration attempts.
“Anomaly Alerts and Bucket Access Logs work together to enhance the security of our customers' valuable data,”
Kari Rivas, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Backblaze told ChannelE2E. “The alerts identify suspicious activity, while the logs let teams trace and investigate what actually happened. It's about surfacing risk early and backing that up with the data to act on it.”
Bucket Access Logs, now generally available, track every operation performed on stored objects - uploads, downloads, deletions - delivering forensic-level insight that was previously difficult to assemble. Both features can be configured via the UI or API, giving teams flexibility in how they manage alerts and investigations.
Event Notifications add a real-time layer on top of this, pushing alerts to admins when actions like object creation or deletion occur. Combined, these features give organizations both a rearview mirror and a forward-facing radar to better understand and act on data risks.
Enterprise Control Without the Overhead
Alongside visibility tools, Backblaze is making it easier for larger teams to securely scale with a new
enterprise web console and role-based access controls (RBAC). The console supports SSO and SCIM integration, enables MFA enforcement, and lets IT teams assign fine-grained permission levels to different users - key capabilities for enforcing zero-trust principles.
"Each of these new security features enables Backblaze to better support zero-trust architectures at scale,” said Rivas. “The console gives enterprises the ability to manage access tightly and securely, while still making administration straightforward, especially for hybrid or multi-cloud environments.”
These updates also cater to MSPs and MSSPs managing multiple client environments. The console allows admins to define access boundaries per client, while new
multi-bucket application keys simplify access control by letting providers assign a single key to a subset of buckets - no need to juggle keys for every client.
"The new enterprise web console was built from the ground up with security as its primary focus,” Rivas added. “MSPs can assign different privilege levels, enforce 2FA, and manage storage by region depending on client requirements. Multi-bucket app keys simplify access management, reduce confusion, and save time.”
Backblaze is continuing to evolve its platform for teams that need more than basic storage—they need control, insight, and secure scalability. These latest features strike a balance between stronger guardrails and operational simplicity, giving IT and security leaders more leverage to protect data without slowing down the business.
