AppDirect Acquires Tackle.io to Launch a Cloud Commerce Platform for Channel Partners

B2B subscription commerce platform vendor AppDirect is acquiring cloud go-to-market vendor Tackle.io as the company creates its own commerce platform that enables software vendors to sell their products and services across major cloud marketplaces.

The acquisition, which was recently announced by AppDirect, is designed to give channel partners and advisors more ways to support channel-assisted marketplace deals that include unified billing and payouts, while also helping cloud providers with better distribution, co-selling, and transactions when working with all types of partners, according to the company.

The deal is also expected to give existing marketplace providers additional access to an expanded catalog of technology services for syndication to customers, while ISVs that are already working with Tackle.io will gain optional access to AppDirect-powered storefronts that could expand their reach into new markets and provide the ability to launch their own white-labeled marketplaces.

A key benefit of the acquisition is that it is expected to provide partners with direct access to hyperscaler marketplaces such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and others as distribution channels, according to AppDirect.

Tackle.io is the fifth business acquisition by AppDirect in the past 12 months. The terms of the transaction, including its price tag, were not disclosed.

Rob Enderle, principal analyst with Enderle Group, told ChannelE2E that AppDirect’s acquisition of Tackle.io increases the effectiveness of these kinds of sales efforts at scale.

“This is an AI-driven sales tool for those that sell apps on large commercial cloud platforms,” said Enderle. “It is a targeted sales solution, meaning it can self-customize for prospective customers, potentially increasing consideration and closing rates significantly.”

These kinds of AI-enabled tools can help smaller vendors in particular, said Enderle. “AI tools like this one are far more capable of leveling the field,” he said. “The marketplace provides access, but scaling targeted sales efforts using traditional tools is outside the capabilities of smaller ISVs. AI can scale very inexpensively, which does allow a smaller firm to appear as capable as a far larger company.”

There are other benefits of such platforms as well, said Enderle.

“AI sales platforms, when properly developed and implemented, can exceed the capabilities of using physical salespeople - who are expensive to train and scale - for far less cost,” he said.

But there are challenges as well, he added.

“There is a feeding frenzy on AI companies at the moment, which typically means that many, if not most, of the companies being acquired will not meet expectations post-acquisition,” said Enderle. “The use of AI for scaling customer engagement is a solid trend, and it will not be long before traditional salespeople are largely obsolete. I am expecting a correction sometime in either 2026 or 2027 once the feeding frenzy stops and people again start doing decent due diligence.”

San Francisco-based AppDirect operates an ecosystem of subscription marketplaces that bring technologies to some 16 million subscribers through about 1,000 MSPs and other providers and 14,000 advisors to help them buy, sell, and manage products and services for their customers. The company was founded in 2016 and is backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, and others.

Tackle.io helps organizations generate, manage, and grow their cloud marketplace revenue. With a team of 150 experts, Tackle provides technology, services, and strategic guidance to help customers build their cloud sales operations and partnerships.
