13. Digital Collaboration: Microsoft and Lenovo have partnered to deliver the ThinkSmart Hub 500, which integrates Microsoft’s Skype for Business directly into one conferencing system that features a rotatable 360 degree screen.

Cisco Outlook: Cisco Systems reported third-quarter profit and revenue that topped analysts’ estimates on Wednesday, but shares fell 4 percent after dour current-quarter forecasts indicated that the transition to a software-focused business remained a work in progress, Reuters says. Still, CFO Kelly Kramer says the company’s business transformation is performing well. Also, quarterly security revenues grew 11 percent year over year.

11. Talent: Paessler AG, which specializes in network monitoring, has named Steven Feurer as CTO.

10. Net Neutrality Vote(s): The U.S. Senate voted on Wednesday in favor of keeping open-Internet rules in a bid to overturn the Federal Communications Commission decision to repeal net neutrality rules, but the measure is unlikely to be approved by the House of Representatives or the White Houses, Reuters notes. Still, yesterday’s Senate vote deserves special mention. Bonus: Key proponents who influenced the vote include MSP and IT services industry leader MJ Shoer, who explains the battle to restore net neutrality here.

9. Partner Program – SD-WANs: RingCentral has launched a new software-defined wide-area network (SD-WAN) certified partners program. Key participants include VMware, CloudGenix, Riverbed, Cradlepoint, Windstream Enterprise, and GTT Communications

8. SMB/SOHO Managed Services: Telenet, the largest provider of cable broadband services in Belgium, has selected Benu Networks’ Virtual Service Edge (VSE) platform to enable SMB and SOHO managed services. VCE enables guest connectivity, device level visibility, and security, Benu asserts.

7. Managed Print Services: MobileIron and ThinPrint are partnering to enable mobile printing for MobileIron customers.

6. MSP Software: SolarWinds MSP remains fully committed to two RMM (remote monitoring and management) platforms, contrary to “fake news” from rivals in the market, according to GM John Pagliuca.

5. Private Equity – Business Continuity: Resurgens Technology Partners has acquired the Assurance Business Continuity Management Planning (BCMP) software business from Sungard Availability Services (Sungard AS). Financial terms were not disclosed.

4. M&A – Big Data & Hadoop: Google has acquired Cask Data, a startup that helps customers to run big data analytics services on Hadoop.

3. M&A – MSPs: American Computer Consultants Inc. (ACCi) has acquired NetGain Technologies of Alabama, LLC. NetGain is an MSP in Lexington, KY with locations in several states. ACCi acquired NetGain’s Birmingham location including their clients, their managed services agreements, and one of their technical resources. We’ll share more details soon.

2. Private Equity – MSP Merger: Breakthrough Technology Group (BTG) and NexusTek, two MSPs with cloud services expertise, have merged. The combined company is called NexusTek. Abry Partners, a private equity firm, in December 2017 made a majority investment in BTG and completed a recapitalization with NexusTek. We’ll share more details soon.

    I saw the Channelnomics article about SolarWinds yesterday. I think the “fake news” approach their competitor is taking is representative of an old school sales approach represented in movies like ‘Glengarry Glenn Ross’, or for those younger folks ‘Boiler Room’ (which one of my young sales guys called ‘a classic’ – sheesh, how old am I). These kinds of sales approaches have been dying off over the years and I hope to see them dead and buried soon. We saw the same thing a year ago with a similar “fake new” voice mail that was targeting another PSA-RMM combo vendor.

    Just from a pure sales standpoint, I think it’s a self defeating approach. Most customers don’t respond very well to someone disparaging the competition and the Internet makes it too easy to verify facts. If I was a SolarWinds sales rep, I’d respond by saying, “clearly this competitor doesn’t think they can compete based on functionality, nor on price, nor on service or support. So the only way they think they can compete is based on trying to spread ‘fake news’. In a way it’s a back handed compliment.”

    If you have a better solution, it should be easy to explain to your ideal customer, why your value prop is a better fit than your competition.

    If you don’t have a better solution than your competition, then “fake news” is not likely to help, it just makes you look like you can’t compete based on the value you bring.

      Jim: Thanks for your note and readership. I think you’ll see a cooling off period (i.e., less rhetoric) between many of the MSP industry software companies within the next few months. You may even see a big milestone moment between many of the players sometime after this summer. The competition will remain fierce. But I think most of the mudslinging will dissipate. We might be able to share more details soon. Stay tuned.

    Joe, Thanks for the mention on the net neutrality issue. Our industry is divided on this topic along some familiar lines. I respect why that is, but as you say, I’ve been a vocal proponent to overturn the repeal. Reuters is right, it’s a significant uphill battle from here, but it’s worth fighting. While I try my best not to be political, this has been made political and the only hope we have is that our elected representatives listen to the will of the people who elected them. I’m not a betting man, but I wouldn’t place a wager on this because sadly politicians are more loyal to their party than to their voters. If this eventually fails to be overturned, maybe, just maybe it will have served as a wakeup call to politicians on both sides of the isle that the people are starting to pay more attention and speaking up. One thing we don’t have to be concerned about is your coverage of our industry on Channele2e. Always fair, balanced, informed and never fake! Thanks Joe and Amy.

      Hey MJ: Thanks for your readership and leadership position on the net neutrality discussion. If our generation gets it wrong, I’m convinced our kids will get it right. And I don’t think we’ll need to wait a full generation for that to happen.
