1Password Partners With Perplexity to Bring Security to AI Browsing

1Password has partnered with Perplexity on the launch of Comet, its new AI-powered browser. The integration brings credential management, secure autofill, and access controls directly into the browsing experience, setting a precedent for how AI-native browsers can combine usability with trusted security.

Rethinking Credential Management in AI Browsers

Unlike traditional browsers, where autofill and password storage were added incrementally, Comet is launching with security built into its foundation. For 1Password, this integration isn’t just about convenience - it’s about preventing a new category of risks tied to AI-driven browsing. Embedding 1Password directly into Comet changes the role of credential management in ways that go beyond what traditional browsers have offered.

Anand Srinivas, VP of Product & AI at 1Password, explained the distinction to ChannelE2E:

“Credentials should always be securely vaulted and autofilled rather than memorized and manually entered. This is true for both traditional browsers and AI-native browsers, but in an AI browser, it’s doubly important. Ensuring credentials are filled on behalf of the AI agent, while being strictly kept from the model itself, significantly reduces the risk of them being leaked or misused.”

By building security into the foundation of Comet, users don’t have to choose between convenience and protection. As Srinivas put it:

“The 1Password browser extension in Comet demonstrates what’s possible when AI and security work together from the start: a browsing experience that’s powerful, seamless, and secure. With the 1Password extension, Comet users can autofill logins, generate strong credentials, and keep their credentials private, even when AI features are involved.”

Balancing Productivity and Governance

AI-driven browsing opens up new ways of working but also introduces new identity risks. 1Password and Perplexity are aligning around the principle that governance must be embedded as tightly as convenience. Srinivas emphasized that security isn’t an afterthought:

“Our approach to AI security is grounded in privacy, transparency, and trust. Secrets stay secret with end-to-end encryption and a zero-knowledge architecture, and users always have clear control over what AI can access, when, and why. These principles of secure-by-default innovation guide how we build our technology and how we choose our partners.”

The Comet browser reflects this philosophy by combining AI features for research, shopping, and planning with the protections that 1Password is known for.

Security and AI Coexisting

The broader lesson of the partnership is that AI adoption doesn’t need to come at the expense of security. Srinivas captured that balance:

“The collaboration with Perplexity on the Comet browser reflects this philosophy. Comet integrates powerful AI tools into the browsing experience, helping people research, shop, and plan more efficiently. By combining Comet’s AI-driven productivity with 1Password’s proven security model, we’re proving that ease of use and strong governance don’t have to be at odds. They can coexist to make secure AI adoption seamless and accessible for everyone.”

The launch underscores how AI-native browsers and trusted security providers can work together to define what safe, usable, and AI-enabled browsing looks like.
