Cloud monitoring provider Datadog is beta testing a log management platform for customers and service providers. The service is fully integrated with Datadog's existing infrastructure and application performance monitoring offerings, the company asserts.

It's a safe bet Datadog will preview and discuss the service extensively at this week's Amazon AWS re:Intent conference in Las Vegas. The new log management service will allow users to detect, diagnose and resolve complex performance problems that would traditionally require many tools and manual efforts, Datadog claims.

Log management is one lane in Datadog’s roadmap towards a unified monitoring experience. according to the company’s product director.

"Our customers want the ability to quickly correlate infrastructure metrics and application traces with relevant logs for efficient troubleshooting and optimal performance,” Renaud Boutet, product director at Datadog. said in a prepared statement. “This level of seamless correlation between different sources of data is completely new, and will help our customers dramatically improve the time to problem resolution."

Highlights of the new service. according to the company, include:

  • Datadog Agent will tail log files and forward streams to the Datadog app
  • Existing Datadog integrations will provide logs alongside metrics
  • Optimized UX with faceted searches for accelerated troubleshooting & investigations
  • Log parsing, Geo IP resolution, URL tokenization, and more performed directly in the cloud with new Processing Pipelines

Datadog Evolves

Datadog opened its doors in 2010. The company's tools span application performance monitoring (APM) and infrastructure monitoring. The company in September 2017 acquired Logmatic.io, absorbing its platform-agnostic log analyzation service integration. Key rivals include New Relic, Cisco’s AppDynamics, CA Technologies, and Dynatrace.

More than 5,000 customers -- including names like eBay, Samsung, Target, The Washington Post, and Zendesk -- have adopted Datadog's offering. On the partner front, Datadog earlier this year hired New Relic and Oracle veteran John Gray as senior vice president of alliances. At the same time, it launched software updates specifically tailored for MSPs, VARs, and other types of channel partners.
