5 Channel Partner Updates: 9 August 2016

Good morning, channel partners. Here are five technology news updates, insights, chatter, and plenty more to start your day for Tuesday, August 9, 2016.

Actually, there are 11 entries for VARs, managed services providers (MSPs), cloud services providers (CSPs) and independent software vendors (ISVs) and telco master agents and agents to sip on. Take a look…

11. Big Data Funding: Keep a close eye on the big data market today. Some fresh funding should show that big data momentum continues even after companies like Hortonworks stumbled a bit in recent months. We should have some views to share by about midday...

10. Big Software Acquisition?: Honeywell International Inc is in talks to acquire JDA Software Group for $3 billion, Reuters reports. The deal, if consummated, would push Honeywell deeper into the supply chain management, distribution and logistics markets...

9. LendingClub Tanks: LendingClub, which matches borrows and lenders via an online marketplace, announced a big quarterly loss yesterday and CFO Carrie Dolan has resigned. Dolan exits roughly nine months after Founder and former CEO Renaud Laplanche resigned...

8. Lame Statement?: FireEye's CEO blames at least a portion of the company's recent earnings shortfall on Ransomware. He says Ransomware is easy to clean up and results in shorter IT security projects for FireEye, rather than more lucrative long-term consulting engagements. My spin? I wonder if some customers simply grew tired of paying high consulting fees to FireEye and started to look elsewhere for consulting services.

7. Partial Cloud Sale: Rackspace sold off a small piece of its business -- Cloud Sites -- to Liquid Web. The deal allows Liquid Web to support a range of popular hosting platforms -- including WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, .NET and PHP. Rumors about a complete Rackspace company sale also continue, with Apollo Global Management reportedly bidding to buy the managed cloud services provider.

6. Oracle Retail Business Hacked: Russian hackers apparently have breached MICROS, Oracle's point-of-sale platform, KrebsOnSecurity reported. Oracle has alerted customers and pushed for password resets, though it's unclear how many customers overall were impacted...

5. Small Business Social Tools: SoLoMoTo, a SaaS marketing platform for SMBs, now serves 100,000 customers worldwide -- and is next heading to the U.S. market. The company's name is short for Social, Local, Mobile, Tools. The platform supports a customized web presence, ecommerce, targeted advertising across Google and Facebook, and more. In some ways, it reminds me of the Kutenda marketing platform that generated SMB buzz a few years ago... Still, I wonder how SoLoMoTo compares to HubSpot?

4. Kaseya Europe: Hmmm... How can Kaseya more effectively engage MSPs in Europe? I suspect an answer will likely emerge later today.

OwnBackup CEO Sam Gutmann

3. Sam's Next Move: Former Intronis CEO Sam Gutmann has been heads-down building OwnBackup, a cloud-to-cloud backup company. I get the sense that we could be hearing some new milestones really, really, really soon...

2. Google Buys Cloud Channel Company: Well this is rather interesting. Google has acquired Orbitera, a cloud commerce marketplace platform that "helps software vendors, service providers and channel organizations to sell and distribute cloud-ready solutions and services." If Google manages Orbitera correctly, the search giant may finally have a big-bang solution for the channel...

Datadog’s John Gray

1. Application Performance Management: We'll be blogging (nearly) live from New Relic FutureStack FS16 New York today. The conference is the perfect excuse for us to learn far more about the APM market, and potential implications for MSPs and VARs that are looking to extend beyond traditional remote monitoring and management (RMM). New Relic CEO Lew Cirne and Channel Chief John Gray.
