NetApp has expanded its cloud migration capabilities by making Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP available as external storage for Amazon Elastic VMware Service (Amazon EVS) on AWS. The move gives VMware administrators a direct path to migrate and run workloads in AWS without re-platforming or altering existing tools and workflows.

Channel-Ready VMware Cloud Migration Path

Amazon EVS allows organizations to run VMware Cloud Foundation inside their own Amazon VPC, alongside other workloads, providing a familiar environment for VMware teams while tapping into AWS infrastructure. By pairing EVS with FSx for ONTAP, customers can carry over on-premises data management and protection practices into the cloud, reducing complexity and avoiding costly refactoring.

“NetApp takes a partner-centric approach that enables the channel to connect with customers and leverage our solutions to solve their biggest technology challenges,” Jenni Flinders, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Partner Organization at NetApp told ChannelE2E.

“Many customers are looking to the cloud to scale their VMware environments and unlock business agility, but want to make sure they achieve cost efficiency without adding complexity. Using Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP with the new Amazon Elastic VMware Service enables partners to help customers leverage NetApp’s proven data management and protection capabilities for VMware environments with the scale and performance of AWS without re-platforming.”

NetApp’s integration adds automation and planning tools designed to streamline migrations. The BlueXP workload factory for AWS now supports EVS workloads, enabling automated virtual machine discovery, datastore provisioning, and FSx for ONTAP configuration. BlueXP disaster recovery for VMware has also been updated to use FSx for ONTAP as a disaster recovery target, supporting both file- and block-based storage options.

“Our partners have access to training and enablement resources, including certifications for solution competencies in critical growth areas like cloud transformation that teach them how our solutions address customer needs, like migrating VMware environments to AWS,” Flinders explained. “

NetApp provides partners rich incentive options that are stackable with other incentives from both NetApp and the AWS Partner program while keeping them simple and consistent. For example, our Services Plus incentive invests in partners’ professional services programs to accelerate migrations to Amazon FSx for ONTAP. And, because Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP is a native AWS service, partners can use AWS credits and access the AWS Migration Acceleration Program as they support their customers.”

New Opportunities for Partner Services and Recurring Revenue

Security is another focus. ONTAP’s autonomous ransomware protection is now available for Amazon EVS workloads, along with BlueXP ransomware protection orchestration. These tools detect threats at the storage layer and help minimize downtime across hybrid environments.

“By making sure Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP is supported for Amazon Elastic VMware Service, customers and partners can leverage the same powerful data management capabilities in the cloud that they use to run on-premises,” Flinders said. “Partners can provide managed services for ongoing management that adapts to customers’ changing needs as they scale their environments or shift business priorities.”

For organizations under pressure to modernize infrastructure while maintaining operational continuity, the combination of Amazon EVS and FSx for ONTAP offers a migration path that preserves operational familiarity while opening doors to new service opportunities for the channel.
