Zero-day vulnerabilities tend to get a lot of attention and grab headlines, but it turns out that known vulns present just as great a risk -- and that risk is rising.

Cyberattacks exploiting 768 known security flaws were deployed last year, which is the highest on record and a 20% increase from the number of actively exploited vulnerabilities in 2023, SC Media reports.

Notably, 23.6% of attacks occurred before vulnerabilities had official CVE entries, highlighting the persistent risk of zero-day exploits, according to a report from security firm VulnCheck. Half of all attacks targeted vulnerabilities within 192 days of disclosure, while a quarter focused on flaws over two years old, suggesting that attackers prioritize outdated and unpatched systems.

Despite a slight year-over-year decline in zero-day attacks, VulnCheck warned that "exploitation can happen at any time in a vulnerability's lifecycle." The report also identified spikes in attacks following major security events, such as the RSA Conference and ShadowServer's KEV data release. These findings emphasize the need for organizations to remain vigilant, regularly update security measures, and monitor industry reports to mitigate risks, the report found.
