Channel Brief: Intel Beats Shareholder Lawsuit

Case dismissed.

Earlier this week, Reuters reported that Intel won the dismissal of a shareholder lawsuit accusing the chipmaker of fraudulently concealing problems in its foundry business, leading to job cuts and a dividend suspension that wiped out more than $32 billion of market value in one day.

In a decision made public on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, U.S. District Judge Trina Thompson in San Francisco rejected claims that Intel took too long to reveal a $7 billion fiscal 2023 operating loss linked to its business of making chips for outside customers, Reuters said.

The case was dismissed without prejudice, which means that the plaintiffs can file an amended complaint if they have stronger evidence, Tom's Hardware noted.

"Plaintiffs argued that Intel and its then-CEO Pat Gelsinger and then-CFO David Zinsner concealed a $7 billion loss of its Intel Foundry unit in 2023, which led to stock inflation as well as a consequent massive $32 billion drop of the company's market capitalization in April 2024, when the company disclosed losses of its newly formed Intel Foundry division for 2023 and Q1 2025," the report said.
