5 Channel Partner Updates: 28 Dec 2015

Good morning, channel partners. Here are five technology news updates, insights, chatter and holiday leftovers (that taste so fresh) to start your day for Monday, December 28, 2015.

Actually, today's update involves 10 items for VARs, managed services providers (MSPs), cloud services providers (CSPs) and independent software vendors (ISVs) to sip on...

10. Encryption Under Attack: A new China law requires firms to turn over encryption keys and passwords to the government when requested. The big concern: Possible spying and hacking issues down the road. Here in the U.S., many backup and business continuity providers support encryption but end-customers are the ones with complete control over the keys -- meaning that the U.S. government can't force a service provider to turn over the keys...

9. Big Brother in the U.K.: Meanwhile, the U.K.'s Home Secretary, Theresa May, is downplaying concerns about the so-called Investigatory Powers Bill, which gives the government certain access rights to online data...

8. Humble Pie: You've built a relatively successful business but you never quite get the credit you're seeking. Careful what you ask for. Even some of the world's greatest companies simply can't please everyone. A case in point: Apple had a lousy 2015 both on Wall Street and across its fan base...

7. Application Performance Management's Value: ChannelE2E spent recent months evangelizing Application Performance Management (APM) to service providers. For a closer look at potential APM benefits, check out this spin from AppDynamics.

6. Docker Container Management: What will Oracle do with StackEngine, it's recent Docker and Container Management acquisition? Oracle Senior VP Peter Magnusson shared some answers. ChannelE2E's advice: Keep a close eye on Docker Channel Chief Roger Egan for key partner and service provider opportunities...

5. Small Business IT Security: Webroot's 2015 SMB Threat Report reveals a range of perspectives and updates tied to MSPs, cybersecurity and SMB technology services...

4. Data Center Tax Exemptions: The state of Michigan has been giving big tax breaks to data center builders and operators. It's tempting to get cloud providers to break ground in your back yard. But now, some critics claims Michigan and other states are giving away far too much to recruit cloud and data center providers into their geographies.

3. Cognizant Buying Dell's Perot Systems?: You already know that Dell is trying to sell Perot Systems along with potential sales of its SonicWall and AppAssure businesses. The latest rumor suggests Cognizant Technology Solutions is bidding to buy Perot Systems, though Dell apparently doesn't think recent offers for the IT services business are strong enough. Dell allegedly is trying to strengthen its balance sheet before the $67 billion buyout of EMC and VMware is expected to close in mid-2016.

2. ChannelE2E Podcast: Our next ChannelE2E Podcast (Episode 057) features Steve Ferman, CEO of Cloud Nation -- a desktop as a service (DaaS) provider that works closely with VARs and MSPs. Ferman acquired the business in 2014, and Cloud Nation has achieved several key business and partner milestones in 2015. Stay tuned for that podcast on Tuesday, December 29, at 9:01 p.m. ET.
