Hadoop, an open source storage system, is increasingly popular for big data applications. Much like the Linux market, Hadoop has multiple commercial distributions. Cloudera, Hortonworks and MapR are among the best-known providers of Hadoop software. Overall, Hadoop is designed to scale up from single servers to thousands of machines, each offering local computation and storage, Zion Research notes.
ChannelE2E Says: No doubt the Hadoop market is growing but the industry forecasts could be a bit misleading. Zion's forecast, for instance, includes spending on the underlying hardware and associated deployment services to get Hadoop up and running. But some of those dollars may never materialize since more and more Hadoop workloads are deployed as cloud services. Also of note, the Hadoop providers have diversified their revenue streams -- focusing on multiple technologies beyond Hadoop, much in the way that Oracle eventually pushed beyond relational databases.
Still, the Hadoop market offers some opportunities to IT consulting firms, integrators, ISVs and channel partners that specialize in big data. Each of the major Hadoop providers -- Cloudera, Hortonworks and MapR -- has a growing channel partner program.
