Future of IaaS and Hybrid Cloud Services: 5 Findings

Share

More companies than ever are looking toward hybrid and private cloud for their infrastructure choices according to a new survey.

The “Developer IaaS Insights Study” was conducted by LeaseWeb USA at DeveloperWeek Austin, an event that features over 2,000 application developers and engineers, developers, managers, and industry executives.

The survey revealed such Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) related findings as:

  1. A majority of companies – 61.4 percent – say hybrid or private cloud is their best infrastructure option moving forward.
  2. Slightly more companies appeared to favor a hybrid option, with 31.6 percent saying they prefer that over the 29.8 percent that opted for a private cloud option.
  3. More than three-quarters of developers said they prioritized scalability, speed, ease of use, and cost as the top factors when choosing their IaaS hosting solution.
  4. However, the cost of migration was cited as the top prohibitive factor when considering migrating infrastructure.
  5. Despite that, more than half of respondents’ organizations (51.7%) plan on migrating their infrastructure in the next two years. A further 26.7 percent have yet to make that decision.

Results like those are especially poignant when considering the fact that less than 20 percent of respondents believe they are using the industry standard, are happy with the performance of their infrastructure, and have no plans to change.

Insights like these can help companies understand the marketplace and exactly what value vendors can provide to businesses. And it’s a growing marketplace.

According to a report from Gartner, the worldwide IaaS market grew 31.3 percent in 2018 reaching $32.4 billion, up from $24.7 billion the previous year. The current heavy in the public IaaS arena is Amazon Web Services (AWS), with the company controlling nearly half of the market. Big gains have been made by contenders like Google and Microsoft, but there is any number of firms vying for companies’ infrastructure dollars.

Now, as this study’s author points out, “This survey is a microcosmic example of the current industry trend.” What is most apparent, given the results, is that companies are adopting custom solutions that fit their exact needs.
