Rubrik is acquiring San Francisco-based AI startup Predibase, adding machine learning deployment capabilities to its growing portfolio, reports CNBC. While financial terms weren't officially disclosed, sources suggest the deal is valued between $100 million and $500 million. The move signals Rubrik’s intent to play a broader role in helping enterprises operationalize artificial intelligence on top of their own data.Predibase brings tools that allow companies to deploy and manage AI models trained on internal datasets, while maintaining flexibility across cloud and third-party data platforms. Its technology integrates with systems like Amazon, Databricks, Google, and Snowflake, enabling enterprises to build domain-specific AI agents without reinventing infrastructure. Once integrated into Rubrik’s ecosystem, customers will also be able to leverage data from Rubrik’s own Annapurna platform. For Rubrik, best known for its data backup and cyber recovery solutions, this acquisition pushes it into a new category. Rather than only protecting data, the company will now enable customers to use that data to power intelligent applications. The combination of security, governance, and AI model deployment could appeal to enterprises looking to scale AI responsibly without losing control of sensitive data.Predibase will continue to operate as an independent unit post-acquisition. Its team of 25 will bring AI engineering experience from companies like Uber, where some of the founding team helped build widely adopted machine learning infrastructure. Rubrik's latest move suggests it sees long-term value not just in storing enterprise data, but in activating it.
