Technology Research: IoT Market Growth, Size Forecast

The number of connected IoT (Internet of Things) devices, sensors and actuators will reach over 46 billion by 2021. That’s a 200 percent increase from from 2016, according to Juniper Research.

Still, Juniper says multiple market challenges will emerge. For instance, vendors will need to overhaul analytics and database systems to handle the next generation of big data that IoT will generate. Emerging partner ecosystems like the Exosite IoT Alliance may help customers to address some of the deployment challenges, Juniper predicted.

ChannelE2E says: Don’t focus on the IoT term during customer discussions. Instead, ask customers what types of systems — beyond servers, PCs, notebooks and network infrastructure — that they’d like to monitor and manage. Also, explore what types of data customers would like to collect and why. In other words, what’s the potential value of monitoring, managing and analyzing data from traditional and non-traditional IT devices?

Also, keep a close eye on emerging IoT partner programs and partner platforms. Examples include Dell’s IoT Solutions Partner Program and Cisco’s Cliqr platform. Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins in the video below describes how Cliqr, Jasper and other company offerings will address IoT.

IoT certainly sounds promising. But remember: The addressable market includes just about anything with an IP address. So be sure to find your focus before chasing shiny IoT objects…
