Tech Data, Propel GPS Offer IoT Solutions for Transportation Industry

When it comes to commercial fleet management challenges, costs frequently are a major concern. Vehicle depreciation, fuel prices, and a cultural shift to go green are just some of the ways fleet managers struggle to keep spending in line.

To that end, Tech Data is partnering with Propel GPS to bring new Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to solutions providers that support transportation, utility, and construction equipment customers.

Tech Data will offer Propel’s IoT/Cloud-based platform as part of its Smart IoT Solutions practice. The software helps monitor temperature and offers along-route virtual geographic boundaries and fleet tracking. The service reduces costs and increases productivity through its reporting capabilities -- whether they’re by vehicle, fleet, driver, or team -- the companies claim.

The IoT offerings protect assets by keeping tabs on driver performance, truck maintenance and making sure the contents of trailers are secure, Tech Data and Propel GPS say. Driver hours are recorded through electronic logging, making sure the legal requirements are met, the add.

Multiple distributors have launched and/or acquired IoT-focused business practices in recent years. For its part, Tech Data launched its IoT solutions practice last year. More recently, the company has inked strategic acquisitions and partnerships as it refines the IoT portfolio.
