Rubrik Acquires Datos IO, Gains NoSQL Cloud Backup Services

Share

Founded just four years ago in 2014, Datos IO has been providing backup and recovery for NoSQL databases and big data file systems for the last 2 years. The company's platform, called RecoverX, is specifically designed to back up high performing services such as Cassandra and MongoDB. The program runs on-premises or in the cloud, and is licensed through an annual subscription.

The RecoverX platform delivers critical backup and recovery capabilities while supporting modern enterprise use cases like cloud mobility, queryable recovery, and in-place analytics. Datos IO has filed 22 patents for application-centric data management.

M&A Time

Apparently, Rubrik took notice -- and decided buy Datos IO. Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. The deal, announced yesterday, will help Rubrik to accelerate how enterprises manage and recover modern application stacks, CEO Bipul Sinha says.

Rubrik already has its own software-defined platform that unifies backup, instant recovery, replication, search, analytics, archival, compliance, and more. Datos IO will become a new business unit, aptly called Rubrik Datos IO. The unit will be led by Datos IO CEO Tarun Thakur, reporting directly to Sinha.

Rubrik & Datos IO: Growth Mode

Both companies have seen rapid growth over the last few years.

While Rubrik has only been in operation for three years, the company was named a Visionary in Gartner’s 2017 Magic Quadrant for Data Center Backup and Recovery Solutions. Former Google Cloud Platform Channel Chief
Bertrand Yansouni recently joined Rubrik to drive alliances and partner engagements.

Meanwhile, Datos IO has pshed into some of the largest enterprises including Fortune 100 companies. Already, three of the top Fortune 15 companies have adopted the platform. We mentioned last year that Datos had doubled its customer base in the first two quarters of 2017. The company was also experiencing 100% renewal rates and expansion within existing Fortune 500 customers.

Further questions about the acquisition can be answered in the FAQ published by the company.

Business Continuity Showdown

Rubrik and Datos IO are on a collision course with a range of companies, ChannelE2E believes. Key competitors will likely include Veeam, Datto, Druva and StorageCraft, among others.

Veeam is marching toward $1 billion in annual revenues; Datto recently merged with Autotask and is doubling down on MSP relationships; and StorageCraft -- now led by former SonicWall executives -- is gaining worldwide momentum with resellers, VARs and MSPs.

And now, Rubrik is plugging Datos IO in into its ecosystem. At first glance, Rubrik's enterprise-oriented cloud focus -- and new NoSQL capabilities -- don't really overlap with the likes of Datto and StorageCraft, which focus far more on the SMB sector. But ChannelE2E still insists: Market convergence and intensified competition between each of the players are on the way.
