Comtrade Launches Backup for Nutanix Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI)

Comtrade Software has unveiled its new HYCU solution, what it calls the first purpose-built backup, recovery and data protection solution for the Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform.

Comtrade Software is a division of Comtrade, which got its start 25 years ago as a software engineering and services company. Since then the Boston-based company has evolved into a software product business, a services company and a systems integrator. Comtrade Software specializes in data protection and management.

This latest solution is a new problem that Comtrade has set out to solve: Protecting data for Nutanix hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI).

What The Heck Is Hyperconverged Infastructure?

HCI itself is a relatively new market, but growing fast. Virtualization server technologies like VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V are mature these days, but HCI is virtualization taken to the next level. Using HCI, partners and customers can virtualize servers, storage, and networking while managing them all from a common toolset. Hence “hyperconverged.”

San Jose-based Nutanix isn’t the only player in the HCI data center arena. HP Enterprise recently acquired SimpliVity, which has been Nutanix’s leading competition. The HCI market is expected to grow from $804.5 million in 2015 to $12.8 billion by 2022, according to Stratistics MRC. Key players also include Dell-EMC, VMware, Huawei, HyperGrid, and Cisco Systems.

HCI is a relatively new approach to IT management which grew out of the concept of converged infrastructure. The goal of converged infrastructure is to minimize compatibility issues and simplify management by providing pre-configured bundles of hardware and software. Under converged infrastructure, the technologies can be separated and used independently if necessary, but with a hyperconverged infrastructure, the technologies are deeply integrated, making it impossible to separate them.

A Problem To Solve: HCI Backup

For MSPs, HCI solutions offer a more effective way to deploy and manage next-generation data centers. Among the  major challenges: HCI solutions need new types of backup and data protection. For its part, Comtrade is bullish on hyperconverged.

To that end, this latest offering supports all workloads on the Nutanix platform, according to a release from Comtrade. The company claims HYCU is the industry’s only automated application discovery solution, with application-specific recovery workflows so admins can backup applications with a single click.

The tech takes three minutes to deploy and two minutes to recover identified data, according to Comtrade. The solution provides an automated application recovery of workflows and tasks.

The HYCU is currently available through Comtrade partners, with pricing starting at $999 per socket.
