Perspective: Be Present

The last few weeks have been incredibly exciting, challenging and invigorating at work. As most entrepreneurs know, there is nothing more energizing than launching the business you’ve been working hard to perfect and seeing it grow faster than your expectations.

But the past few weeks I’ve also been surrounded by a lot of heartache. My friends, my neighbors and past classmates have been dealing with devastating personal losses. These weeks have reminded me again and again – be present.

I’ve built businesses before. But this time around here at After Nines Inc., I’m trying to live by this motto — be present. I’ve been able to drive my kids to soccer, swimming, running and Hebrew School. I’ve seen almost all of my daughter’s and son’s cross country meets, swim meets and soccer games. I’ve attended curriculum nights, board meetings and had drinks with friends.

And I vow to continue to do this. I’m reminded time and again that life can be short, and life can be hard. The best things have to be savored; we have to take advantage of the time we get with our families and our friends. We should eat dinner with our kids, put down our phones and let our emails wait.

I love my work. I love what I do, I love the business that Joe and I are building and I truly come to work each day eager to be here. But I have also learned that I love what I do because I LOVE all the other things I can do.

And now I remind you to be present. Don’t work too hard, or too late. Next time you can sneak out and watch your child race, or play an instrument, or even drive them to a friend’s midday — go for it. When you have the rare opportunity to grab a quick lunch with a friend, or your spouse, do it. Work will still be there and you’ll be happier when you get back to your desk.

Life is short — enjoy the things you love.
