Chipmakers Halt Supplies to Huawei Technologies

Huawei Technologies faces numerous supply chain, chip and software partner challenges amid new U.S. regulations against the China-based networking and smartphone giant. The showdown comes as Huawei competes for lucrative 5G wireless network deployments worldwide.

Among the latest developments:

  • Google has suspended certain business with Huawei,  Reuters reports.
  • Some Google Android services no longer support Huawei smartphones, The Wall Street Journal reports.
  • Chipmakers Intel, Qualcomm, Xilinx & Broadcom have told their employees they will not supply Huawei with technology until further notice, Bloomberg reports.

Huawei Faces U.S. Restrictions

The moves surface amid new U.S. restrictions on Huawei. U.S. officials worry that the company’s equipment may allow China’s government to spy on foreign businesses, users and governments. Both China and Huawei have denied the claims.

Nevertheless, the U.S. government has attempted to rally governments worldwide against Huawei equipment deployments. The effort has yielded mixed results, with most companies and countries simply saying that they’ll more closely scrutinize Huawei equipment purchases — rather than outright banning such equipment from their networks.
